Case study: Reaching more subscribers with the Bango DVM™ – the ViX growth story

by Marta Trias Gray

ViX, owned by TelevisaUnivision, is the world’s first large-scale global streaming service exclusively serving the Spanish-speaking community. With more than 70,000 hours of premium Spanish-language content, ViX offers movies, dramas, comedies, live sports, telenovelas, and children’s programming to millions of viewers. It was launched July 2021, and accesses content from TelevisaUnivision’s library.

In 2022, TelevisaUnivision connected with the Digital Vending Machine® (DVM™) from Bango to open new telco channel across Latin America, the US and beyond for its ViX streaming service – simplifying access for subscribers and powering faster growth for the service.

The challenge

When TelevisaUnivision launched its first streaming service, Blim, the technical team managed all partner integrations in-house. This approach worked initially, but with the development of ViX, the company set far more ambitious growth targets. Managing multiple integrations internally was no longer sustainable.

Previously, subscriptions were driven through app stores or a mix of B2B billing integrations. But to scale ViX faster across multiple regions and resellers, TelevisaUnivision needed a simpler, more scalable way to:

  • Manage multiple new integrations at the same time
  • Reduce the technical overhead of building bespoke integrations from scratch
  • Expand quickly into new markets with both national and international reach

The solution: the Digital Vending Machine® (DVM™) from Bango

“Bango stood out as one of the few that met all our expectations.”

Vanessa Rosas, General Director, Global Distribution & Streaming Partnerships, TelevisaUnivision

When TelevisaUnivision evaluated potential partners for ViX, it reviewed several companies with both national and international reach. Only a few could handle multiple integrations simultaneously and scale effectively.

With the Digital Vending Machine ViX could:

  • Build for scale from day one: Unlike its earlier Blim service, which required in-house integrations, ViX was designed in collaboration with Bango to be scalable and flexible across multiple markets
  • Onboard partners efficiently: The High-Level Design (HLD) documentation provided by Bango gave a ready-made framework for new resellers, making the setup process clear and simple instead of starting from scratch
  • Gain deeper insights: Regular reports from Bango, combined with TelevisaUnivision’s own analytics, offered a holistic view of performance, including active users, churn, lifetime value (LTV), and retention across every reseller

This foundation made ViX a partner-ready platform capable of rolling out quickly, with the tools needed to monitor and manage growth effectively.

The results

“By working with Bango we can get time to market to around eight weeks, which is very good.”

Vanessa Rosas, General Director, Global Distribution & Streaming Partnerships, TelevisaUnivision

The collaboration with Bango quickly delivered measurable results:

  • 8 B2B partners launched, generating 13 active integrations across Mexico, the US, and Central America
  • Time-to-market reduced to around 8 weeks per integration, compared with the lengthy, resource-heavy in-house builds of the past
  • Faster expansion into priority markets, accelerating subscriber growth by opening new telco channels
  • Prepaid innovation: With the introduction of Smart Top-Ups, ViX gained a flexible way to serve prepaid users, allowing multiple credits to be stacked and subscriptions extended seamlessly

By partnering with Bango, TelevisaUnivision has been able to scale ViX faster, grow its subscriber base, and expand into new markets with greater speed and efficiency.

Looking ahead

TelevisaUnivision continues to expand ViX across Latin America and beyond, using the Digital Vending Machine from Bango to scale distribution efficiently. With Super Bundling, ViX is positioned to reach millions of new customers who seek a simpler, more unified subscription experience.

“The Digital Vending Machine® from Bango is constantly evolving, with new features being added to meet market demands. The latest addition, known as Smart Top-Ups, is primarily for the prepaid segment, though its flexibility allows it to be adapted for the other use cases as well. This feature manages the top-up of any offer, by stacking multiple top-ups and controlling the extension of subscription according to the stack. This results in a more flexible, convenient, and seamless experience for all our subscribers.”
